Cassino develops at the foot of the hill on which the famous
Abbey of Montecassino stands. Cassino was for centuries the
administrative center of the Land of San Benedetto. Also known as
The Martyr City, it was destroyed by bombing during the Second
World War and rebuilt after the war. The city flourished in Roman
times with the name of Casinum: it had an amphitheater, a
theater, several temples, spas in the villa of Varrone, two fora
for trade and business, an imposing aqueduct of over 22 km.
Sumptuous villas of the powerful of Rome sprang up scattered over
the surrounding area.
